Ships in the shade

We reported on the new Class 707 naval fuel supply vessels, which have now been laid down. However, the ways in which tankers were procured were not always so ideal. The ancient shipbuilding tradition of hammering a coin into the keel of a ship is said to have existed thousands of years ago, as coins have been found under old ship masts during excavations. This is said to bring good sailing and good luck to the ship and crew at all times. The navy has not been waiting quite as long - but quite a while - for a replacement for the outdated Rhön-class fuel supply vessels. These single-hull tankers are still doing their duty thanks to professional crews, but...

F 126 - Ship 5 and 6: a difficult birth

The good news: the contractually anchored option for two more ships can be exercised following the decision of the German Bundestag's Budget Committee on 12 June. On 19 June 2024 - exactly four years after the construction contract for the first batch was signed - the contract for the second batch of two F 126 ships was signed in Koblenz at the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw). The construction contract signed on 19 June 2020 provided for the procurement of four units. The construction of two further units would be possible via an option to be exercised within two years....

Oslo - UECC achieves its own emissions reduction target

United European Car Carriers (UECC), an innovative Norwegian maritime transport company, has been investing in alternative fuels for years and more than doubled the use of biofuels in its fleet of ships last year. The shipping company's goal is to reduce emissions by at least 45 per cent by 2030. After all, the low-emission concepts save port fees and, as a car transporter, it would be difficult to ship e-cars across Europe without wondering whether ship propulsion with carbon-based fuels is still in keeping with the times, according to UECC. The company already received the Bremen "Green Shipping Award" in 2019 for the conversion and renewal of its fleet. The innovative installation of battery hybrid technology in...

New framework guidelines for overall defence

For a long time, Minister Pistorius appeared to be a lone voice in the wilderness when he called in public for war readiness and higher defence spending. The rest of the government and large sections of politics did not seem to be interested. Now, however, there has been a cabinet decision that extends far beyond the Ministry of Defence. On 5 June, the Federal Government issued new overall defence framework guidelines. Minister Pistorius presented them to the press together with his colleague from the Ministry of the Interior, Nancy Faeser. More important than the details of the content of this 57-page document is how it came about in the first place. For the first time in 35 years,...

High-precision weapon of the future
