Special rudder for the F126 frigate

Damen Naval, the main contractor for the four F126 frigates, has commissioned Damen Marine Components (DMC) to develop and produce the required rudder pairs for the combat vessels. They are intended to improve the hydrodynamic properties of the ships and withstand extreme impacts. According to Damen, the DMC full spade rudders of the Atlantic type have been calculated according to the special hull shape and operational profile of these frigates. With their slim profile, the rudders reduce flow resistance and improve the F126's ability to maintain its course at high speeds, Damen continues. Good manoeuvrability at low speeds in harbours or during special missions of these naval vessels is maintained....

Havariekommando: Good to know that it works!

When something goes wrong in the German Bight, the German Bight Traffic Centre is the first to know - and if the situation becomes really dramatic, it asks the Central Command for Maritime Emergencies in Cuxhaven to take over overall control of a particular emergency. This is what happened last Tuesday, 31 January 2023, when the crew of the multipurpose freighter "Royal II", en route from Esbjerg to Cuxhaven with a cargo of wind turbine parts, reported an engine failure off Heligoland at 16:30 and the anchors would not hold in the storm. The "Royal II" (length: 132 m; width: 21 m; flag: Panama) was drifting at low speed with two anchors deployed....

Geography comes before history

The island location has significantly influenced the character and thinking of the British. From the other side of the Channel, things look different. Ian Morris is regarded as a historian of the long lines. A good ten years ago, in his bestseller "Who rules the world?", he raised the fundamental question of why civilisations rule or are ruled. One of his answers was appropriate at the time, which was characterised by interventions by Western states that often intervened in regional conflicts in Africa, the Balkans, the Middle East and the Hindu Kush with the help of local forces. Back then, you could watch Morris ride through...

Brazil: The next environmental disaster on the horizon

Update from 5 February 2023 And it happened just as you could have counted on five fingers: On 4 February 2023, the Brazilian navy sank the scrap carrier "Sao Paolo", which had been drifting in the Atlantic for months and was contaminated with pollutants, in a controlled manner about 190 nautical miles (350 kilometres) off the coast - just inside the Brazilian economic zone - at a water depth of 5,000 metres, free of underwater cables and protection zones. There was "no alternative" - due to the high risk of the ailing, leaking ex-flagship sinking uncontrollably at any time. Environment - doomed to failure The only astonishing thing is that even after the change of government in Brazil...

Is the navy being forgotten in air defence?

The Patriot, Iris-T and Arrow land-based systems are the talk of the town when it comes to air defence. However, the German Navy already has modern and effective weapons for this purpose in the form of frigates 124. Russia's unlawful war against cities and critical civilian infrastructure in Ukraine has finally led to a realisation in Germany of the importance of efficient air defence. Now it is time to seriously and swiftly re-equip - together with other NATO partners. This was announced by Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht in a statement on the fringes of the October meeting of NATO defence ministers in Brussels. According to the statement, fourteen European countries and Germany have signed a letter of ...
