Energy: New offshore solar park system

The Dutch offshore specialist Oceans of Energy has been granted approval in principle by Bureau Veritas for the system design of an offshore solar park. It is the first offshore solar park in the world that has proven itself even in high waves. A first "solar farm" with an output of 50 KW has already been in operation in the North Sea since 2019 for testing and verification purposes. System design Instead of heavy structures anchored in the seabed above the sea surface, which are normally used for offshore technologies, the offshore solar farm system is modular and lightweight. It utilises the sea surface directly as a support - like a water lily floating on the surface of the water. To...

Kiel dominates in naval shipbuilding

In marineforum 7/8-2022, Dieter Hanel traced the development of the Bundeswehr and navy in Kiel. In the second part, the author takes a look at the maritime industry in the state capital. With the rearmament of Germany and the formation of the Bundeswehr in 1955, the rebuilding of a German defence industry also began. On 16 March 1959, Kiel-based Howaldtswerke, which still had around 13,000 employees at the time, received an order from the Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement for the construction of twelve Class 201 submarines, based on the development results of the Lübeck engineering office. 12 December 1959 was the...

Black Sea: Is there a danger from floating mines?

Update 25 January 2023 The Bulgarian Navy was able to disarm two drifting anchor mines in the first two days of this week 23/24/01/2023. On Monday, a mine-like object was reported floating in the water about 10 miles south of the border with Romania and only 200 metres from the coastal rocks. A helicopter crew was able to verify the mine and guide a speedboat manned by mine divers to the site. The object was identified as a detached Russian-made YaM anchor mine and was defused by an explosive charge five hours after the sighting. At around the same time, 60 miles further south, a Ukrainian freighter reported another drifting mine....

Size Matters

With China in mind, the American navy is to receive additional ships. This also raises the question of the shipbuilding industry's capacities on the other side of the Atlantic. The US Navy published the Navigation Plan 2022 (Navplan 2022) on 26 July. These documents, which are published at irregular intervals, provide an insight into the structural and capability planning of the US naval forces. The author of the Navplan is the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), in this case Admiral Michael Gilday. The new fleet composition propagated in the Navplan caused the greatest stir. The stated goal is a battle force of 373 manned ships plus 150 large, unmanned ships.

Traditional ships in Hamburg are looking for volunteers

NDR in Hamburg reported on 14 January 2023 that the operators of traditional ships are looking for new volunteers. "We need young talent in all areas, for all historic ships - and the harbour railway," said Claus Liesner, Chairman of the Board of the Hamburg Maritime Foundation (SHM). The foundation is very much aware that there are only a few German seafarers left. "After their active service at sea, many former seafarers have continued to be actively involved on our ships in the past," said Liesner, but there is an increasing lack of new recruits. "From engine drivers to deckhands to ship's command, we are looking for volunteers - for all...
