Automatic reconnaissance chain

In future, sea mines are to be detected and identified in a fully automated process. Joint trials between WTD 71 and Atlas Elektronik demonstrate the potential. In September 2021, the Wehrtechnische Dienststelle für Schiffe und Marinewaffen, Maritime Technologie und Forschung (WTD 71) took part in the REP(MUS) trials (Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping Augmented by Maritime Unmanned Systems) off the Portuguese coast. As part of these trials, investigations were carried out in the areas of underwater communication and mine defence. The future of maritime naval warfare is increasingly based on unmanned systems that operate as autonomously as possible - both above and below water. Particular attention is being paid to...

Federal government buys shipyard

New old name from GDR times: Warnowwerft What initially sounded like an idea born of desperation has become a serious reality. There's no such thing as impossible, seemed to be the motto of this major project - and without the Ukraine war, such quick and pragmatic solutions would probably still be lost in the jungle of bureaucrats, regulation-obsessed people and testing processes. And yet it seems to fit: Decades of shortages in the Bundeswehr have left their mark on the navy, repairs and layovers are lengthy and complex, and the availability of units in the already far too small navy is poor. On the other hand, the end of the tradition-steeped...

Russia: Third multi-purpose frigate "Gorshkov" class in the Baltic Sea

The multi-purpose frigates of the "Admiral Gorshkov" class (project 22350, 135 metres, 4,500 tonnes) were to be built in 2014 in a series of fifteen units and quickly replace various specialised, but also expensive and complex old-build frigates. This was the time of the launch and christening of the second platform with the name "Admiral Kasatonov" - the "Admiral Gorshkov" took another two years to enter service. However, it was also the year in which the keel was laid at the Severnaya Verf in St. Petersburg for construction number three, the "Admiral Golovko", which is now undergoing functional trials in the Baltic Sea after being fitted out until November. Originally, the...

Germany's door opener in the Indo-Pacific

After the end of the Indo-Pacific Deployment 2021 of the frigate Bayern almost a year ago, the announced German involvement in the region has gone quiet. How can it continue? Our problem is not a lack of rules, our problem is a lack of will to comply with and implement them. Chancellor Olaf Scholz attested to this in his speech to the United Nations in New York on 20 September. Even if the Chancellor's statement primarily refers to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, it is also likely to apply implicitly to other autocratic regimes. Because not only since the...

Russian "Yasen" class attack submarines with hypersonic weapons from 2026

The "Yasen" class (Project 885/885M, 133 metres, 12,000 tonnes submerged) is the benchmark for Russia's nuclear-powered attack submarines. The type boat K-560 "Severodvinsk" has been on its keel for 30 years, but the subsequently modified M-boats only followed a good 15 years later. Construction numbers 2 and 3, K-561 "Kazan" and K-573 "Novosibirsk", are already in service with the Northern Fleet - the following three boats, K-571 "Krasnoyarsk", K-564 "Arkhangelsk" and "Perm", are to be assigned to the Pacific Fleet, with K-571 currently undergoing its functional trials with the Northern Fleet. The boats have four launch modules on both sides, each of which can be equipped with four 3M55/3M54...
