By hook or by crook: Sinking of the cargo ship Melanie Schulte

Shortly before Christmas 1952, the cargo ship Melanie Schulte disappeared almost without a trace in the North Atlantic. The accident has now been reconstructed at the Helmholtz Centre Hereon. The sinking of the multi-purpose freighter Melanie Schulte west of the Scottish coast on the night of 21 to 22 December 1952 is considered one of the worst disasters in German merchant shipping after the Second World War. All 35 crew members lost their lives and it was not until weeks later that wreckage and a lifebuoy washed up on the Scottish coast. The parts indicated that the ship, which had a displacement of 10,000 tonnes, had broken apart. The Melanie Schulte, which only entered service on 9 November 1952...

Recent maritime headlines are causing concern. Is the public aware of what is happening? Where do we actually stand in terms of maritime blindness? More than half a century ago, the German Maritime Institute and its marineforum set out to spread the "maritime idea" south of the Moin equator, something like this: "Understand that industry and trade, jobs and prosperity depend on the open sea and its access points. US Navy goes its own way to 6th generation fighter jet

It's all about the 6th generation fighter jet: while the US Air Force's NGAD (Next Generation Air Dominance) model has been put on hold due to skyrocketing costs and the focus is now shifting to cheaper drones, the US Navy is still sticking with its planned F/A-XX fighter jet. The Navy assumes that the contract for the new model will be awarded soon and expects it to enter service in the 2030s. This development comes as a surprise, as the US Senate wanted to cut 90 per cent of the development funds requested by the Navy for the F/A-XX in the middle of the year. It would now be possible for the Air Force...
