Russia's submarine presence in the Mediterranean at a turning point?

Return to the Baltic Sea On 7 May 2025, the Russian submarine "Krasnodar" (B-265), a boat of the improved Kilo class (project 636.3, Russian "Varshavyanka"), passed through the Danish straits together with the ocean-going tug "Evgeniy Churov" (SB-921) in the direction of the Baltic Sea. A few days later, the unit arrived at its home port of Kronstadt as planned. The escort unit of the Sliva class, belonging to the Baltic Fleet (correction 29.05.25), left the Baltic again southwards on 11 May and was last in the Bay of Biscay. Customs are investigating because spare parts and technology allegedly travelled to Russia despite EU embargoes. However, Damen denies having knowingly circumvented sanctions in 2022. Damen also points out that its business areas - including offshore, cargo and naval shipbuilding -...

US Marine cancels traditional event

The US Navy is cancelling its International Seapower Symposium (ISS), which has been a tradition for 56 years. The Pentagon confirmed this to the United States Naval Institute (USNI), allegedly due to a lack of funding. Every two years since 1969, the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO, the equivalent of the inspector of the German Navy) has welcomed the inspectors and commanders of more than one hundred navies to the Naval War College in Newport, R.I., for the three-day symposium. Following the conference, the Naval War College publishes the proceedings. "The purpose of the International Seapower Symposium is to provide a forum for senior international naval leaders to discuss common maritime issues and...
