Energy: Wind farm off Rügen now connected to the grid

As reported by NDR 1 - Radio Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on 17 January 2023, another wind farm in the Baltic Sea is now supplying electricity. "Arcadis-Ost 1" is located 19 kilometres off the coast of Rügen and has been producing wind energy since last week, according to the Belgian energy company Parkwind. Construction of the foundations began last June by the Deme Group, and the first turbines were installed in November with the help of a floating crane. Ultimately, the wind farm will have 27 wind turbines and a capacity of 257 megawatts. According to Parkwind, this could theoretically supply up to 290,000 households with electricity. In the coming years, the...

"MV Tennor Ocean" on the move

Newbuilding 782 from Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) will set off on a test voyage of several days on the North Sea and Baltic Sea after a short stay in dock, before heading for Bremerhaven. The 210-metre-long RoRo ferry will move to Dock 3 at the Lloyd Werft shipyard there for around a week so that the shipbuilders at Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft can carry out the remaining work on the ship's hull to optimise its performance data. The "MV Tennor Ocean" will then set off on a test voyage lasting several days on the North and Baltic Seas. All technical systems will be checked and nautical manoeuvres carried out in a tightly timed programme. Already tested during the voyage from Flensburg to Bremerhaven...

Security: Mysterious events off Gdansk

A robber's tale could hardly read better - but what happened off the coast of Gdansk should make you sit up and take notice. Bad luck in the middle of the night In mid-January, three divers were rescued from distress by the Polish coastguard and SAR services around three miles north of Gdansk when their small, red, very well motorised leisure boat broke down and drifted off in adverse weather conditions. They claimed to be Spanish amberjack divers and had professional diving equipment and an underwater scooter with them, but all but one of them could not identify themselves and did not have a diving licence for this sea area. None of the people involved...

Protection of maritime infrastructure: first ship arrives at Royal Navy

The first of two ships intended for this task arrived in Birkenhead near Liverpool on Thursday, 19 January 2023. "Topaz Tangaroa" is to be repainted and refitted for military use at the Cammell Laird shipyard. In six months' time, she will be painted grey and put into service with the Fleet Auxiliary of the Royal Navy. Priority: protecting maritime infrastructure Following the sabotage of the two Nord Stream pipelines in September 2022, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made the programme one of his priorities. Instead of a new national flagship (to replace the Royal Yacht "Britannia"), he accelerated the programme to...

Fire defence on container ships: Recommendations of the DNV

What is - or at least should be - a technical design principle on grey ships and a daily routine in service operations, does not have to be just as consistently decisive on civilian-crewed, cost-oriented cargo and tanker ships: Fire safety in harbour and sea operations. Fire hazard on container ships In the civilian sector, it is less the handling of flammable and explosive substances inside the ship than the cargo in the cargo or container hold. In the case of containers in particular, cargo knowledge and monitoring is rarely available at all times. This is why the topic of "Containership Fire Safety" is currently on the International Maritime Organisation's (IMO) two-year agenda: In the subcommittee...
