Update: Bosphorus remains closed to warring parties

Ukraine will not be able to participate in the mine clearance operation agreed between the Black Sea navies of Turkey, Romania and Bulgaria. As expected, Turkey has told its NATO allies that it will not allow the two minehunting units (M108 HMS "Grimsby" and M112 HMS "Shoreham") handed over to Ukraine by the UK to transit its waters through the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits. Turkey is referring to the Montreux Convention, which regulates transit even in times of war. Although the agreement excludes ships returning to their home harbours, neither Russia nor Ukraine have had any intention of allowing ships to pass through the...

Military coalition against the Houthi in Yemen grows

Other nations have joined the coalition with the United States to send a final warning to the Houthi militant faction in Yemen, which has attacked shipping in the Red Sea several dozen times since November 2023. In addition to the USA, the co-signatories now include Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore and the United Kingdom. Bahrain, one of America's closest allies in the Middle East, is the only nation in the region to have joined the declaration. Bahrain is home to the US 5th Fleet. The coalition warned that the attacks were "illegal, unacceptable and deeply destabilising"...

Russia's Arctic crude oil route

Russia once again shipped crude oil across the Arctic Ocean last year. This included the crude oil tanker "Primorsky Prospect" (approx. 113,900 tonnes, 250 metres long), which belongs to the Russian state tanker company Sovcomflot (SCF). It is one of the few tracked cargoes on this route from the Russian Ust-Luga in the Baltic Sea, along the Norwegian coast with destination Rizhao in China. However, eastbound shipping had to be suspended for this winter on 30 November 2023. The use of the so-called Northern Sea Route (NSR) through the Arctic waters could reduce transit time compared to the southern route through the Mediterranean and...

Turkey: Black Sea navies agree on mine clearance

Turkey, Romania and Bulgaria are planning their first major joint operation to clear mines, after each country had previously cleared detected mines on its own. The defence ministers of the three countries are planning a signing ceremony in Istanbul on 11 January. Although the three countries are NATO allies, this is not a NATO operation. Turkey opposes the presence of naval units from other NATO countries in the Black Sea, arguing that they could further fuel tensions in the region. But of course Turkey would ask its allies for help if it was needed, according to the Turkish defence minister. The mines were...

Trouble looms in Hamburg: "Cosco" calls union ver.di to the scene

Hamburg: The Chinese state shipping company "Cosco" wants to secure containers on board itself in future - a service for which so-called "lashers" are usually employed. The Chinese state-owned shipping company "Cosco" has held a 24.9 per cent stake in the "Tollerort" terminal of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) since the summer. According to the trade union ver.di, however, "Cosco" now wants to leave the securing of containers on one of its feeder ships to the seafarers on board. For ver.di, this would be a breach of collective labour agreements - jobs are seen as being at risk. ver.di has called on "Cosco" to refrain from independently "lashing" and for HHLA to ensure that the seafarers at its Hamburg terminals...
