With determination to reverse the trend

Shipbuilding industry calls for industrial policy determination from Brussels and Berlin The VSM - Verband für Schiffbau und Meerestechnik e.V. (German Shipbuilding and Ocean Industries Association) hosted its annual press conference at the venerable Slomanhaus am Steinhöft in Hamburg. And the media came: it is clear that the maritime side of our lives in Germany is slowly being recognised. Too much has happened on the sea routes, but it has not yet reached everyone: Germany is a maritime-dependent nation. The VSM never tires of emphasising this. Big day for a big ship

For the NVL Group, the MBV project is one of several naval projects in surface shipbuilding. The second batch of Class 130 corvettes is also currently being built for the German Navy. The christening of the "Karlsruhe" as the third of the new corvettes is expected in the coming weeks. NVL is also involved in the production of the new Class 126 frigates together with the Dutch Damen Group. In the background to the event, there was news that six frigates are now being planned instead of four. This would be an enormous step for the Navy's order situation, both operationally and in terms of availability, and would be in line with the German Navy's 2035+ targets.

Methanol engines require adapted firefighting

Current fire extinguishing systems are inadequate for fighting engine room fires involving methanol-based engines, according to a new fire safety study. Engine fires Against the background of the growing interest in methanol as an alternative marine fuel, the study by the British company SURVITEC, a global provider of survival technologies, carried out extensive and comparative fire tests on marine engines fuelled with both diesel oil and methanol. The tests confirmed that conventional water mist firefighting systems do not provide the expected extinguishing performance on methanol fires. If conventionally fuelled ships are to remain safe, a new approach is needed, according to the product manager for water mist systems at Survitec. Bilge fires The tests also showed that standard extinguishing systems...
