Minehunting boat "Datteln" returns from NATO mission

On 20 June 2025, before the start of Kiel Week, the minehunting boat "Datteln" returns to its home port of Kiel. For a total of six months, the boat was part of the Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1 (SNMCMG 1) and was involved in the Baltic MCM Ex 2025, Open Spirit and BALTOPS manoeuvres. Under the command of frigate captain Marcus Fiene, the 42 men and women of the crew have travelled around 12,000 nautical miles and called at several other ports in the Baltic Sea in addition to Helsinki, Copenhagen, Karlskrona and Visby. A special event was the visit to Visby. Here, in co-operation with the Swedish navy, a...

"Drakon" at the petrol station

Israel's submarine weapon is being built in Kiel On 12 June 2025, the boat was moved from its shielded outfitting area at TKMS in Kiel to a berth right next to the new submarine construction hall to be refuelled with hydrogen. It can be recognised by the red flag prominently displayed in the tower of the INS Drakon. Sailors know this flag BRAVO. Apparently there is movement in the procurement project. The first shipyard sea trials could therefore start in July, when the hustle and bustle of the upcoming Kiel Week is over. The current berth of the INS Drakon, which is prominently visible to everyone in Kiel's inner fjord, is likely to be a good choice against the backdrop...

Before BALTOPS: Russian navy in Skagerrak and Baltic Sea

Russian naval activity in the run-up to BALTOPS 2025 in the Skagerrak and western Baltic On 20 May 2025, the Russian frigate "Admiral Kasatonov" (project 22350) left its home port of Severomorsk. Together with the Udaloy class destroyer "Vitse Admiral Kulakov" (Project 1155), it was sighted in the Skagerrak on 26 May. While the "Admiral Kasatonov" remained in the sea area, the "Vitse Admiral Kulakov" continued its journey through the Kattegat and the Great Belt into the western Baltic Sea. Analysts assume that the "Admiral Kasatonov" deliberately remained in the Skagerrak in order to obtain a situation picture of the deploying NATO forces in the run-up to BALTOPS....

Ocean-going tug "Rügen" in action

There was a premiere on 12 June 2025. The German Navy's new ocean-going tug "Rügen" deployed to the Aegean and is now the second civilian-crewed ship to take part in the Aegean mission. Under the command of Captain Lutz Lücken, the ocean-going tug is making its way to its first deployment in the Mediterranean. It wasn't easy: bought second-hand, perceived with doubts. The former "Rota Endurance" was put into service on 23 August 2023. The ship had to be extensively converted in order to fulfil the so-called Bundeswehr standard. This involved numerous modifications to the bridge, the radio room, the cabins, the small lazaret,...
