It is a further development of the Ivan Gren class, known for its striking silhouette with the wide projecting carrier bow and the aft island. The new landing ship now resembles the traditional dock landing ships of the American Whidbey class (186 metres, 16,000 tonnes) or the Chinese Yuzhao class (210 metres, 20,000 tonnes), but is significantly smaller than these at 150 metres in length and around 8,000 tonnes displacement.
