India and Vietnam against Chinese advance

In order to contain China's advance in the Indo-Pacific zone, India handed over the Kirpan, an FK corvette of the Khukri class (91 m, 1500 tonnes), to the Vietnamese navy. This was preceded by a USD 100 million loan, which Vietnam used to buy twelve high-speed coast guard boats in India, and a mutual agreement on the exchange of personnel and the joint use of military logistics and infrastructure. These are both fundamentally new aspects of Southeast Asian integration in the region. Chinese units are increasingly appearing off Vietnam's coast to back up unlawful territorial claims. In the Indian hinterland, Chinese troops are deployed in the Kashmir region and in the neighbouring countries of Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, large-scale Chinese port construction...

Minister Pistorius visits the "Warnowwerft" naval arsenal in Rostock

Federal Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius visited the Warnowwerft naval arsenal (MArs) in Rostock-Warnemünde on Thursday, 21 September 2023, to find out about the order, capacity utilisation and infrastructure. The Bundeswehr took over the site of the former MV shipyards last summer. Instead of building cruise ships, naval vessels are now to be serviced here. There is a video recording of the minister's speech on stern.de. NOCO23: Early and successful completion

From a press release by Rostock Naval Command: Exercise Northern Coasts 23 was successfully concluded today, around 40 hours earlier than planned. "In the free-play phase of the exercise, all participating units were able to consolidate the training successes of the first week of the manoeuvre and significantly improve operational-tactical cooperation at unit level, despite some poor weather conditions. As Exercise Director, I can already say today that all participants have benefited greatly from NOCO 23 in terms of their own operational readiness and cooperation within the multinational group. I am very satisfied with the results," said Flotilla Admiral Stephan Haisch. The DEU MARFOR staff in Rostock also successfully demonstrated its leadership skills in the...

Paraguay's historic navy and the comeback of the CAÑONERO

Paraguay - The country, which is only accessible via the Rio Paraguay and is cut off from the open sea, has a very small but illustrious navy. The units are all quite old. The headlines are therefore usually only made by the traditional ship of the Paraguayans, the HUMAITÁ, a 70-metre-long, 850-tonne gunboat that has been moored firmly on the banks of the Bahía de Asunción since December. That is why, as the commander of the Paraguayan navy assured us, it cannot really run aground and possibly sink as the navy's pride and joy, despite its heavy list. Whipped up by the storm and...

Light at the end of the tunnel

The time for downsizing seems to be over in Operational Flotilla 2. The challenges of the future can be mastered with new ships and modern systems. Operational Flotilla 2 in Wilhelmshaven is the largest operational unit in the German Navy. The frigates assigned to it are the platforms with the broadest spectrum of capabilities, operational areas and components to be organically integrated. The same applies to the associated support platforms. The resulting range of operational requirements has always meant that the material has always required constant further development and regeneration in order to fulfil the respective requirements of modern operations and prevent obsolescence. Conversely, this...
