Black Sea Fleet: Naval aviators hit hard - fleet commander dismissed

Now the smoke has cleared and things are a little clearer. Until 14 August, according to Moscow, it was improper handling of ammunition that led to the massive explosions on 9 August at the Saki naval air base, located 40 kilometres north of Sevastopol, right next to Novofedorivka beach. Satellite photos are now available as comparative images that show the extent of the damage: at least 3 unprotected ammunition depots were hit and (or as a result of this) 8 fighter-bombers were destroyed and more than 20 others were severely damaged. A heavy blow to the 43rd assault aviation regiment of the Marines stationed there, which was both...

Sail training ships - so old and so modern

A moment of carelessness and a wave took me off my tired legs and I slid roughly across the wooden deck. Somewhat shocked and dripping, I heard the boatswain shouting at me in the wind through the water in my ears "All right? Then watch sailor - to the sheet!" There we pulled on the rope with a loud rhythm of "haul away". This went on for hours. It wasn't an exercise or a harassing drill, but a battle with a storm. What were harmless lines on the chart below deck in meteorology were harsh reality up here. Why do people do this to themselves? Sailing...

The major maritime event in Rostock and Warnemünde is undoubtedly a fixed date in the annual calendar of sailors and ship-loving holidaymakers alongside Kiel Week. As in previous years, the Hanse Sail opens on the second weekend in August and offers locals and tourists a wide range of entertainment with a maritime flair. The German Armed Forces, in particular the German Navy, will be involved in organising the event with a large contingent of ships, boats and helicopters. Traditionally, the opening jump is accompanied by...

Sneak routes and cheat loading

Tiny Egyptian harbour is a transshipment point for Russian oil. Western sanctions apparently make people very inventive. A cargo of around 700,000 barrels of Russian oil, or about 112,000 tonnes, was delivered to Egypt's El Hamra oil terminal on the Mediterranean coast in the early morning of 24 July. A few hours later, another ship picked up another cargo from the port that may have contained some or all of the Russian barrels, according to ship tracking data observed by Bloomberg. The destination of the cargo is therefore difficult to trace, contributing to the increasing opacity of Russian oil shipments. El Hamra, which is operated by the Egyptian Western Desert...
