Following the German government's investment in defence company Hensoldt last year, Italian company Leonardo has now acquired another large block of shares from financial investor Kohlberg Kravis & Roberts (KKR). The stake held by both anchor shareholders is 25.1 per cent each, giving each a blocking minority. According to its own information, Leonardo is paying around 606 million euros, which corresponds to a price per share of 23 euros. The closing price of the Hensoldt share was 15.58 euros on Friday. Leonardo would thus have paid a premium of just under 50 per cent. With their investment, the Italians want to establish a strategic presence in the growing German defence market. The Dutch Van Speijk is leaving operational readiness ahead of schedule. This was announced by the country's Ministry of Defence on 22 April, after the crew had already been informed the day before. The reason is a significant personnel shortage on board. The crew will be reassigned to other ships in the Dutch navy at short notice, for example on the sister ship Van Amstel. The personnel shortage is not limited to the two Karel Doorman-class frigates, but extends to all surface vessels. Technical personnel in particular are in short supply, making the de facto decommissioning of the Van Speijk from summer 2021 unavoidable. The 122 metre long and 2800 tonne displacement ship...

The future Canadian Surface Combatants (CSC) will be equipped with the Sea Ceptor air defence system from MBDA. Its missiles are based on the Common Anti-Air Modular Missile (CAMM). They are quickly deployable and can be used at a high cadence so that several threats can be combated simultaneously. One of the Sea Ceptor's special features is the so-called Soft Vertical Launch. The missile does not start its rocket engine in the VLS, but is initially ejected with pressurised air. The FK's engine only ignites at a certain altitude, protecting the ship and sensors from damage caused by the heat of the engine. At the same time, threats in a 360-degree radius and...
