Royal Navy - the frigate dilemma

The Type 23 frigate "HMS Iron Duke" was the last remaining unit of the Type 23 flotilla (133 metres, 4,300 tonnes) that once comprised 16 ships in the port of Portsmouth. It has now been redeployed to its new home port of Devonport/Plymouth, where the other six remaining Type 23 frigates are already based. The ships, which are now 40 years old and very costly to maintain, are now concentrated at one location for better coordination of maintenance measures. The original plan from 2017 was to relocate all sub-hunting frigates with towed arrays to Plymouth, while those without towed sonar were to remain in Portsmouth. However, some frigates were decommissioned more quickly than...

Utilising ships more efficiently by reducing emissions

Onboard event provides impetus for improving ship operations What will the fully electric operation of a ferry look like in the future? How can alternative light sources improve energy efficiency? How can blind trips be avoided? These questions were at the centre of the latest event organised by the Maritime Cluster Northern Germany (MCN). On board the Scandlines hybrid ferry "Schleswig-Holstein", interested parties from shipyards, suppliers and shipping companies as well as from the MCN Ship Efficiency Specialist Group learnt about this forward-looking topic in a practical way during operation. The trip took place on Tuesday, 29 April, from Puttgarden to Rødby and back. "I am delighted that so many participants from various segments of the maritime industry accepted our invitation....

Warning strike at the Port of Hamburg - The power of the trade unions

The recent warning strikes in the public sector also affected shipping traffic in Hamburg. A targeted action by the trade union Verdi almost paralysed the port of Hamburg. According to a spokesperson for the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), the pilots were no longer able to reach the ships requiring pilotage because the pilot transfer service was on strike. Without pilots, container ships are not allowed to pass through the Port of Hamburg and have to wait in the North Sea or block the terminal. It has not been announced how many ships were affected by the strikes. kdk,...

Public prosecutor's office investigates Damen Shipyards

Is the defence sector affected? At the end of April 2025, the Dutch public prosecutor's office publicised its investigation into Damen Shipyards and former executives. There is suspicion of corruption and discrepancies in procurement contracts. Investigators from the Dutch Financial Investigation and Prosecution Service (Fiscale Inlichtingen- en Opsporingsdienst, FIOD) allege that unclear payments were made to intermediaries for ship sales in Africa, Asia and South America between 2006 and 2017. Customs are investigating because spare parts and technology allegedly travelled to Russia despite EU embargoes. However, Damen denies having knowingly circumvented sanctions in 2022. Damen also points out that its business areas - including offshore, cargo and naval shipbuilding -...

Hegseth and the US Navy - more oomph instead of perpetual rubbish

Pete Hegseth, the Minister of Defence, announced in mid-February that around 8 % of the investment programmes in the US defence budget are to be cut - this corresponds to around 50 billion dollars. The main projects affected are those relating to diversity, equality and inclusion, followed by climate protection programmes. The freed-up funds are to be used instead for presidential priorities - above all for securing the US border and for the purchase and introduction of the "Iron Dome for America" missile defence system based on the Israeli model. What is now required is a credible deterrent potential - and the ability to win wars. The construction programme is not affected by the cuts...
