Italy: The Marina Militare was also in the Indo-Pacific

The German navy is not the only one with its units in the Pacific region: the 15-year-old aircraft carrier Cavour (235 metres, 27,000 tonnes) of the Marina Militare returned to its home port of Taranto after a five-month stay in Southeast Asian waters. At the end of October, the accompanying battle group consisting of the multipurpose frigate ALPINO of the Bergamini class (144 metres, 6,700 tonnes) and the patrol frigate Raimondo Montecuccioli of the modern Thaon di Revel class (143 metres, 5,700 tonnes) also returned to Italy. The latter started its journey at the beginning of May in order to take part in the multinational large-scale manoeuvre RIMPAC off Hawaii while sailing through Panama. On the other side...

Corvette newbuildings in the Caspian Sea

After the corvette-sized Dena (95 metres, 1,500 tonnes, entered service in mid-2021, hull number 75), construction number four of the Iranian Navy's Jamaran class, completed its eight-month voyage around the world in May 2023 accompanied by the forward base ship Makran (230 metres, 120,000 tonnes), two similar newbuildings have appeared that are worth reporting on, even if images and text material are scarce. A year ago, the fifth ship of the Jamaran class, the Delayman with the hull number 78, was commissioned in the Caspian Sea. It is regarded as the successor to the ship that wrecked at the harbour pier of Bandar Anzali in January 2018...

Subsidies for EPCs - as an export model?

The European Patrol Corvette (EPC) project is now entering its second development phase - bringing Europe closer to the construction phase of the first two prototypes for the LRM (long-range multipurpose) and FCM (full combat multipurpose) variants. At Euronaval in Paris, the shipbuilding consortium consisting of the Naviris cooperation company (Fincantieri/Italy, Naval Group/France) and Spanish Navantia signed an initial agreement on the start of phase 2 of the joint modular multi-purpose patrol corvette (MMPC) project. This follows the selection by the European Commission in May 2024 of the design submitted by Naviris at the end of 2023. The second phase of the MMPC project aims to develop concept...

Skirmishes in the Baltic Sea

China: EloKa-Jet now carrier-capable

After a squadron of J-15Ts could be seen flying in formation over the Liaoning and Shandong carriers and two J-15Ds could also be seen on the flight deck of the Shandong (305/315 metres, 60-70,000 tonnes), China officially unveiled these new aircraft variants at the Zhuhai Airshow at the beginning of November. The Shenyang J-15 ("Feisha" - Flying Shark) was developed as a carrier fighter jet based on the Russian Sukhoi Su-33. The People's Liberation Navy (PLAN) was able to acquire corresponding prototype modules in the Ukraine in 2001. Russia later described the J-15 as an "unlicensed clone of the Su-33" and complained in 2009 when China presented the finished model. The J-15T is...
