Danish approaches to the Baltic Sea - drones and home defence cutters

Copenhagen - at whose gates and in whose bays Russian ships from the dubious Shadow Fleet and the civil-military Syria/Mediterranean Express parade - reaches into the state coffers and releases funds for an equipment programme for the Royal Navy. Its equipment is inevitably ageing and is becoming increasingly outdated. As a first step, half a billion euros is already being spent on better protection for vulnerable underwater infrastructure in the form of a new class of ship specifically for these tasks. In addition, four new vessels are to be built as platforms for monitoring compliance with environmental regulations in such a way that mines can be detected at any time.

China's new Type 054B frigate - more than just further development

China's new Type 054B Luohe frigate - more modern, heavier and capable of air defence China's new Type 054B Luohe frigate was ceremoniously commissioned in Quingdao at Yuchi Bay Naval Base at the end of January 2025. At around 5,000 tonnes, it is larger and more powerful than the previous 30 units of the standard Type 054A Jiangkai II-class frigate. The Luohe thus marks a clear technological leap in China's fleet strategy. The new Type 054B Luohe frigate is not only heavier, but also significantly better armed: In addition to the tried-and-tested 8-cell anti-ship missile containers, it has a modern 32-cell star silo for the full range of FK armament. The new platform has undergone...

Manta drones to secure Taiwan Strait

After Singapore unveiled its autonomous MARSEC platform for controlling the waterways off the coast of the city state earlier this year, the island state of Taiwan, which is threatened by mainland China, has now also made its unmanned combat system for the defence of the Taiwan Strait and national waters public. Similar to the Magura drones successfully deployed by Ukraine against Russian ships of all sizes, the "Endeavor Manta" manufactured by Taiwan's China Shipbuilding Corporation (CSBC Corp.) is now set to expand the defence spectrum of the Taiwanese navy in a cost-effective and personnel-friendly manner. The explosive charge integrated into a trimaran hull made of fibreglass-reinforced plastics leaves room for a few more weapons on the hull sides.

However, as there is still a 30-year-old partial stock of three KDX-I destroyers, seven Ulsan frigates and 16 Pohang corvettes in the...

Russia's Pacific Fleet minehunters

Pacific Fleet minesweepers Yakov Balyaev and Pyotr Ilyichev have carried out a minehunting exercise in Avacha Bay on the east coast of Kamchatka using the Skanda unmanned surface drone. The two Alexandrit-class boats (project 12700) were built at a shipyard in St Petersburg. With a length of 62 metres and a displacement of 900 tonnes, they currently have the largest fibreglass composite hulls in the world - a construction method originally developed by the German company Siemens. The ships, which entered service in 2020 and 2022, tested both their on-board systems and the latest Russian surface and underwater drones for mine hunting during the exercise. The class includes...
