Turning scrap into money

War in the fog of uncertainty

Centuries ago, weather and the environment were operational success factors - and remain so to this day. A good weather forecast can significantly influence the outcome of a battle. Ahora todos hablamos espanol. After the Spanish Armada defeated England under Queen Elizabeth around 1588, Spanish supremacy in Europe, the Atlantic region and thus in the colonies was secured. The emerging secession from the Christian faith by Protestant splinter groups and the young Anglican Church was prevented, and Isabel la Catolica's mission to proselytise the entire New World in the spirit of Rome was successfully continued. Even today, [ds_preview]Spanish is still the world's number one language...

Cross Domain Command

At its core, modern warfare results in an increasingly complex interplay of domains. With its Cross-Domain Command Concept, NATO is pioneering this development. When the Third Reich declared war on the USA on 11 December 1941, four days after the Japanese navy attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, this came as no surprise to the US armed forces. More than six months earlier, leading officers in the US Navy had already realised that war with the Third Reich was imminent. The question was not whether, but rather...

USA Vice Admiral Shoshana Chatfield surprisingly dismissed

Vice Admiral Shoshana Chatfield, U.S. Military Representative (USMILREP) on the NATO Military Committee, was also fired without notice in April. The Military Committee is the body that advises NATO's highest-ranking military officers from across the alliance and draws up strategic guidelines. Chatfield, a trained helicopter pilot and successful graduate of Boston, Harvard and San Diego, was the first female president of the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, before taking office in Brussels. There, she came to the attention of a few conservative opinion makers for her "over-the-top" commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) issues. Their letter of complaint to the Secretary of Defence was probably most welcome and led via his...

Naval divers: responsibility under pressure

Naval divers combine in-depth expertise with creative adaptability to act effectively even in unpredictable situations at depth. The Navy fulfils the high level of responsibility for these people and their equipment with the little-known Navy Diving Service Officer. On 27 June 2006, a tragic diving accident occurred which led to a comprehensive review of the Bundeswehr's diving service. The Diving Accident Investigation Board, headed by Captain Michael Brühn (then the Navy's Commissioner for Accident Investigations), carried out a detailed investigation to identify the causes and risks and develop measures to improve diving safety. These...
