New population survey: Germany in the military leadership role?

Russia is continuing its war of aggression against Ukraine unabated, while trust in its ally, the USA, is dwindling. How is the German population reacting to this dual challenge? The annual population survey conducted by the Bundeswehr Centre for Military History and Social Sciences (ZMSBw) provides answers to questions on threat perception, transatlantic relations and the willingness to defend Germany. Over 2,000 randomly selected citizens took part in the representative survey between 11 April and 17 May 2025. Majority see Russia as a threat Russia is perceived by two thirds of the population as a threat to Germany's security. The fear of...

Argentina - wants to buy "queens of the sea" and abolish its "flying ducks"

A national magazine described them as the "queens of the seas", the last two of the eight Maestrale-class frigates (123 metres, 3,000 tonnes) from the 1980s that the Argentinian Ministry of Defence is negotiating with Rome to purchase. Predominantly equipped with underwater weapons, the frigates built by Fincantieri were the backbone of submarine hunting in the Mediterranean for a good 40 years. "Grecale" and "Libeccio" were decommissioned last year and could still provide good service in South America for a few years after a refit - their mid-life conversion also took place twenty years ago. Not exactly cheap to maintain due to their age, but thanks to...

If we lose the sea ...

The maritime foundation of European defence and national resilience is more important today than ever before. Securing it is vital for a free Europe. In contrast to the USA, Europe has no cargo ships on standby for national emergencies. There are contracts for the use of merchant ships for strategic logistics - dimensioned for military transport tasks in foreign missions, not for supplying Europe in the event of defence. And if you look at the roughly estimated cargo volume of even a war economy,[ds_preview] the greatly reduced American Reserve Fleet of today is not even sufficient for one side of the Atlantic. Where a few decades ago a certain amount...

... and lead us not into temptation!

How do you accumulate a small fortune? By starting with a big one. This old realisation means that you should be careful with a financial cornucopia. And the 2026 defence budget is such a cornucopia. To put it in context: the decision to suspend the constitutionally enshrined debt brake for defence and infrastructure will result in a defence budget of a completely new dimension: in 2026, a "base amount" of one percent of economic output will be allocated to defence in the federal budget, [ds_preview]all further expenditure above this will not be counted towards the debt brake. According to calculations by budget experts, the €100 billion "Bundeswehr special fund" will expire in 2027....

China's new helicopters for on-board use

After the navalised Z-20J variant of the Chinese transport and multi-role helicopter Harbin Z-20 was presented to the public at the Zuhai Airshow in November 2024, this flight type was already shown on board the amphibious assault carrier "Hainan" (Type 75, 237 metres, 31,000 tonnes) during on-board operations in the Chinese media in mid-2025. The Seahawk equivalent (Sikorsky SH-60R/S, four-bladed rotor) equipped with a five-bladed rotor fills the operational gap between the heavy Z-8 (replica French Super-Frelon) and the light Z-9 on-board helicopter (replica Aerospatiale Dauphin). The Z-20J extends the amphibious capabilities of the PLA-N and makes up for a backlog of twenty years. Another variant, the Z-20F, is designed for...
