Die US Navy führt eine neue Lazarettschiffsklasse ein. Die neuen Einheiten sind kleiner, schneller und wendiger als die bisherigen Lazarettschiffe der USA.     Im Dezember 2023 vergab die US Navy an Austal den Vertrag für den Bau von drei Lazarettschiffen der neuen Bethesda-Klasse. Die neuen Schiffe werden auch als Expeditionary Medical Ship (EMS) bezeichnet. Es handelt sich um die ersten neuen Lazarettschiffe seit Einführung der beiden Einheiten der Mercy-Klasse Mitte der 1980er-Jahre.
