War graves at sea: China has British wrecks plundered

At the end of May, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained the Chinese bulk carrier "Chuan Hong 68", which was anchored without authorisation in its economic zone off the southern province of Johor and equipped for deep-sea dredging. During the search, metals, weapon parts and large-calibre ammunition shells were discovered. The captain and crew (32) were subsequently arrested, but have since escaped with the ship. Malaysia accuses the crew of the vessel of illegally salvaging wreckage on the edge of the South China Sea and, in particular, of plundering British warship wrecks from the Second World War. Norway: The Russians in the north - the Americans in the south

While the Russian Northern Fleet closes an airspace the size of half of Germany in the Barents Sea north of Norway and the Russian Kola Peninsula to exercise a submarine attack coordinated with air forces, the American super aircraft carrier "USS Gerald R. Russia The warnings against flying in the zone (NOTAM - notice to air men/missions) apply for 24 to 26 May 2023 and for an area of 150,000 square kilometres. Apart from Finnish airlines, this mainly affects Asian and Arab airlines - European and American airlines avoid the area anyway. Fifteen units of the Russian Navy...

Baltic Fleet: New Steregushchiy corvette in service

The Severnaya shipyard in Saint Petersburg delivered its fifth Steregushchiy corvette (project 20381, 105 metres, 2,200 tonnes, 8 FK SS-N-25) to the Russian Navy in the second week of May. The keel of the multi-purpose combat ship was laid a good eight years ago, albeit under the initially planned name "Retiviy". It now bears the name "Merkury", reminiscent of a rather symbolic gun brig for the Russian Navy, which was able to hold its own against two Turkish frigates off the Dardanelles in 1829 and escape from enemy forces. Baltic Sea The construction plans were also still those of the Baltic Sea Steregushchiys of projects 20380...

Satellite photos: China on the advance in Antarctica

According to media reports from the beginning of May, new satellite images from a Washington-based think tank show that China has resumed construction of its fifth Antarctic research station after a break of around five years. According to Chinese sources, the aim is to open up new shipping routes and expand its own research in the Antarctic. However, in view of the current global political situation, Western governments fear that the increasing presence of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in the polar regions is aimed at strengthening reconnaissance and surveillance. China's fifth station in the Antarctic The new research station on Inexpressible Island on the edge of the Ross Sea is to include an observatory with a satellite station, according to the Centre for Strategic...
