After the keel was laid shortly before the end of last year at Kership in Concarneau/South Brittany (part of Naval Group) for the first construction of the twelve-unit Belgian-Dutch minehunter programme, the French Navy has now also joined the programme at Euronaval. The aim is to promote cost-reducing commonalities and interoperability of mine defence systems along the Western European coast. In particular, France intends to model the design of its new minehunter on that of the binational platform. A contract for the construction is expected to be signed next year, although a delivery date still needs to be discussed, as the Belgian and Dutch boats are to be launched first....

The aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and the Horizon-class destroyer Chevalier Paul conducted air defence exercises with the Aster (MBDA/Thales) air-to-air missile on 4 October. On the second Sunday in October, the Spanish frigate "Santa Maria" (F81, type ship of the same class, Spanish Oliver-Hazard-Perry licence build 1982-94) should have replaced her sister ship "Numancia" (F83) in the "European Union Naval Force - Somalia - Operation Atalanta". At the very least, this day was scheduled as the departure date from the Rota naval base in south-west Spain. However, two days before departure, shortly after midnight, a fire broke out in the empty helicopter hangar, which could only be declared extinguished the following day - with such extensive damage that departure was no longer an option. The crew reacted quickly and supported the surrounding units...

The project was launched by the then Minister of Defence Florence Parly at the last live EuroNaval 2018 (only virtual in 2020). Now, on 19 October 2022, the French Ministry of Defence used this year's international naval industry gala at the Naval Group stand in Le Bourget to present a model of the future carrier with some details. The design is not yet finalised insofar as no final decisions have yet been made on the design of the island ('tower' and command bridge of an aircraft carrier) and other elements (such as the number of EMALS). They should be finalised by February 2023 to such an extent that it will be possible to move into the French-owned...
