Naval shipbuilding in Schleswig-Holstein at the turn of the century

Defence technology summit with Minister President Günther The defence technology industry in Schleswig-Holstein is an important part of the German armaments base with around 30 efficient companies employing around 8,500 defence technology employees. The business activities are broadly diversified with naval shipbuilding, the land systems and aviation industries as well as the communications, weapons and ammunition systems, sensor, optics and optronics industries. Naval shipbuilding is of particular importance to security and industrial policy in Germany's northernmost federal state. With 16 companies and 5,300 people directly employed in defence technology, it is the largest sector. With surface and underwater shipbuilding, it has key defence technologies and core capabilities that are essential for security, industrial and alliance policy as well as technological and armaments industry reasons.

BUND calls for more protection for the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site

The German Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) is calling for better protection of the Wadden Sea in the expansion of offshore wind energy and planned natural gas extraction, particularly in order to preserve the title of "UNESCO World Heritage Site". The protection of the Wadden Sea must be consistently prioritised over economic interests, as the status of the area is severely threatened by exploitation interests. In the last status report from September 2023, the UNESCO World Heritage Commission declared that the extraction of raw materials was incompatible with the Wadden Sea's World Heritage status. UNESCO had therefore called on Germany and the Netherlands to refrain from oil and gas extraction in the Wadden Sea and its immediate surroundings. BUND demands...

Start of production "keel laying" of the German Poseidon

Boeing and Spirit Aerosystems began production of the first of eight P-8A maritime patrol aircraft for Germany at a ceremony in Wichita, Kansas (USA) on 3 April 2024. Representatives of the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), the German Navy and the German P-8A Poseidon industrial team took part in the keel-laying ceremony at Spirit Aerosystems.
