Sustainable ship recycling - an opportunity for Germany?

DNV press release In its 2021-2025 coalition agreement, the current German government writes: "We are strengthening shipbuilding across the entire value chain, including ship recycling, as the industrial core in Germany." The Deutsche Nautische Verein von 1868 e. V. (DNV) and the Maritime Cluster Norddeutschland e. V. (MCN) very much welcome this statement, as we see considerable challenges in the strengthening of the entire value chain proclaimed by the federal government - in particular the establishment of sustainable ship recycling - in Germany, from which an urgent need for action can be derived. It was a big day for the TAMSEN MARITIM shipyard in Rostock, as ship christenings are not part of the repair yard's daily routine. The specialised boats also enable the use of underwater equipment and divers. The new workboats are replacing two AM and AK boats from the...

Spain's Armada loses a flagpole

After 43 years of service in the Spanish Armada, initially as a powerful combat frigate and for the last 20 years only lightly armed as a patrol vessel (OPV), the "Infanta Elena" (Princess Helena, eldest daughter of Juan Carlos I) will now also retire from active service in mid-March as the penultimate unit of the "Descubierta" class. She was the third ship of this class, built in Cartagena at the Navantia shipyard, which at that time still bore the proud name "Empresa Nacional Bazán de Construcciones Navales Militares". The fourth "Descubierta" frigate was then named after Christina, the younger sister of the reigning King of Spain. Of the original six units, there are currently...
