Damen delivers a new ASD tug to the Lithuanian Navy

It can happen that quickly: can you come to terms with such a "role model"? The photos of the new Damen ASD 3010 ICE class multi-purpose tug LNS "Lokys" (H 24) for the Lithuanian Navy were taken on the delivery voyage from Rotterdam to Klaipeda on 4 May 2025 in the Kiel Canal. On Monday 12 May, nine months after the contract was signed, the christening ceremony for the Lithuanian Navy's new multi-purpose tug took place at the Klaipėda cruise terminal. The tug has also been developed for use in non-ice-free waters. The "Lokys" has a length of 30 metres, a bollard pull of almost 60 tonnes and a maximum speed of...

Rising Sun for breakfast on Heligoland

Anyone who had breakfast on the dune in Heligoland this morning could enjoy a rare sight: the Rising Sun, one of the world's most famous mega yachts, built by Lürssen, is anchored here for a few days. Something is being tested here, but what exactly remains unclear. One thing is certain, however: with the swell today, the wine cellar on board is likely to be in motion - which is why she is anchored here. The 138-metre yacht, designed by the legendary Jon Bannenberg, was once owned by Oracle founder Larry Ellison and now belongs to music mogul David Geffen. With 12,230 hp, 28 knots and a basketball court,...

Russia's submarine presence in the Mediterranean at a turning point?

Return to the Baltic Sea On 7 May 2025, the Russian submarine "Krasnodar" (B-265), a boat of the improved Kilo class (project 636.3, Russian "Varshavyanka"), passed through the Danish straits together with the ocean-going tug "Evgeniy Churov" (SB-921) in the direction of the Baltic Sea. A few days later, the unit arrived at its home port of Kronstadt as planned. The escort unit of the Sliva class, belonging to the Baltic Fleet (correction 29.05.25), left the Baltic again southwards on 11 May and was last in the Bay of Biscay. The return of the "Krasnodar" marks the end of a deployment in the Mediterranean lasting just under three months - a period of operation that is considered to be a long one for diesel-electric submarines without access to stationary logistics in...

Wedel - "Willkomm Höft" ship welcome system active again

The town in the district of Pinneberg had publicised that the tourist attraction on the Elbe was defective and could not be repaired due to the poor budget situation. As a result, a local company took a look at the system and got one of two loudspeakers working again. In the meantime, both loudspeakers of the maritime flagship have been replaced with new ones, free of charge for the town of Wedel. This prevented the 'Welcome Point' from going silent for a longer period of time and all 'pots' were once again welcomed and bid farewell with the national anthem and well-meaning words. Background "As a mark of respect to the seafarers", this tradition has been practised since June 1952. At that time, the first...

AI against the silent threat under water - Helsing's glider

New underwater glider from Helsing On 13 May 2025, Helsing, a young Munich-based software developer, presented its SG-1 Fathom underwater reconnaissance system and the Lura AI platform at parallel events in Portsmouth and Hamburg. The events, one at the traditional Royal Navy base, the other at the newly opened maritime representative office of the defence technology company in the German Hanseatic city, send a clear signal: in view of growing threats to critical underwater infrastructure - such as pipelines, fibre optic cables or offshore platforms - the need for long-term, networked and autonomous underwater surveillance is increasing noticeably. Cutting-edge digital technology is becoming a central component of modern maritime surveillance. And Helsing is responding to this with...
