First stop: Rota

On its way to the Far East, the frigate Bayern has made a stop in the Spanish harbour of Rota. There, just a few nautical miles off the Strait of Gibraltar, Commander Tilo Kalski and his crew were welcomed by soldiers from the EU Naval Force (EU Navfor). During the voyage, the German frigate will also take part in Operation Atalanta for some time. On 2 August, the Bayern left its home port of Wilhelmshaven under the watchful eye of Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer. Over the coming months, the ship, which was commissioned in 1996, will be travelling through the Mediterranean, the Suez Canal and the Indian Ocean....

From north to south

Britain wants to go global again. To this end, it is having the Royal Navy's flagship, the brand new Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier, sail halfway around the world to the east with a multinational battle group. But the focus is also on the south, albeit not quite as large-scale and media-effective. The HMS Protector will be the first British Navy ship to sail to the far South Atlantic and visit Antarctica since 2019. At first glance, it can only be recognised as a naval vessel by its hull number (A 173), as its signal red hull, white superstructure and yellow masts...

Bavaria to China - Beijing asks why?

Shortly before the Bavaria set sail yesterday, the Bundeswehr announced the frigate's planned itinerary. Shanghai is one of the harbours to be visited over the next seven months. However, this is not yet certain, as a visit to China has so far only been enquired about and a response is still pending. And according to the independent Hong Kong daily newspaper South China Morning Post, this will remain the case until Berlin provides more details on the purpose of the mission. In the run-up to the trip, Inspector Kay-Achim Schönbach had already explained that the Bavarians' trip was also intended to "demonstrate...

Frigate Bayern heads for the Indo-Pacific

On Monday, 2 August, the frigate Bayern set sail in the presence of the Federal Minister of Defence, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, to move to waters last sailed by the German Navy 19 years ago. The itinerary was published just in time for the departure. It is a big programme. The voyage will take the Bavarians to three continents, 16 countries and 17 harbours. The programme includes exercises with partner navies, temporary participation in the Sea Guardian operations in the Mediterranean and Atalanta in the Horn of Africa, involvement in the UN sanctions regime against North Korea and various port visits in Singapore, Australia and Japan. With the offer...

A journey with many question marks

After 19 years, a German Navy ship set sail for Southeast Asia again today. The Hamburg was supposed to set this course at the beginning of May 2020, but the voyage had to be cancelled due to coronavirus. Despite the long preparation time, not all questions have been answered, partly due to the ongoing pandemic. The ports of call have now been officially announced, but whether the crew will be able to go ashore there despite being fully vaccinated will in some cases only be decided in the coming days and weeks. The corona situation in some parts of the travel area is deteriorating noticeably, with some countries making their...
