Half a billion euros for "Polarstern II"

The "Polarstern I" is to be replaced in 2027. The Bundestag has cleared the way for the construction of the research vessel "Polarstern II", which has been particularly eagerly awaited by the German shipbuilding industry. The Budget Committee approved additional funds so that the major project, which is important for climate protection research, can be put out to tender. The new ship is due to replace the ageing "Polarstern" in 2027. The ship drifted in the ice around the North Pole for a year in 2019/20 while scientists from many countries researched the effects of climate change. German shipyards have been waiting years for the lucrative order for the "Polarstern II". However, the order has to be put out to tender across Europe. Planning for the new build has been underway since 2012, but...

And: a small island with strategic significance It was a home-made Ukrainian weapon - two R-360 Neptune anti-ship missiles, to be precise - that brought the defenders what was probably the most memorable victory of the war so far: the sinking of the Russian Black Sea flagship Moskva. Why was the Moskva so symbolically important for both sides? On the same day that Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" to "demilitarise and denazify" Ukraine, the guided missile cruiser "Moskva", the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, arrived off the tiny Snake Island accompanied by the patrol ship "Vasily Bykov" and demanded the surrender of the 13 soldiers stationed there. The answer...

Attack on yacht off Yemen

ATALANTA: Continued need for maritime security Armed men attacked the sailing yacht Lakota off the Yemeni coast on 19 May and attempted to board it. The ship remains unmolested and safe. However, the incident makes it clear that pirates and militant forces in the region continue to pose a potential threat. According to Operation Atalanta of the European Union Naval Force (EU Navfor), the sailing trimaran "Lakota" was south-east of the Yemeni port of Hodeidah in the southern Red Sea near the strategically important Bab-el-Mandeb Strait when three boats with five people on board, flying the flag of...
