On its way to the Far East, the frigate Bayern has made a stop in the Spanish harbour of Rota. There, just a few nautical miles off the Strait of Gibraltar, Commander Tilo Kalski and his crew were welcomed by soldiers from the EU Naval Force (EU Navfor). During the voyage, the German frigate will also take part in Operation Atalanta for some time. On 2 August, the Bayern left its home port of Wilhelmshaven under the watchful eye of Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer. Over the coming months, the ship, which was commissioned in 1996, will be travelling through the Mediterranean, the Suez Canal and the Indian Ocean....

On Monday, 2 August, the frigate Bayern set sail in the presence of the Federal Minister of Defence, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, to move to waters last sailed by the German Navy 19 years ago. The itinerary was published just in time for the departure. It is a big programme. The voyage will take the Bavarians to three continents, 16 countries and 17 harbours. After 19 years, a German Navy ship set sail for Southeast Asia again today. The Hamburg was supposed to set this course at the beginning of May 2020, but the voyage had to be cancelled due to coronavirus. Saab today signed a contract with the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) for the modernisation of the 123 class frigates. The Swedish defence contractor will supply new radar equipment, fire control systems as well as command and weapon deployment systems and integrate them on the ships. Work is scheduled to begin this year and is expected to continue until 2030 for the four units. The order is worth around 450 million euros. Saab is acting as the general contractor.
