Brunsbüttel: Brussels approves state aid for LNG terminal

The state development bank KfW (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau) is authorised to provide financial support to the German energy company RWE and the Dutch energy network operator Gasunie. Energy security The landing point for liquefied natural gas will improve the supply and gas infrastructure in Germany and thus also contribute to the EU's energy security. The measure that has now been approved contains sufficient precautions to limit any distortions of competition. This was announced by Margrethe Vestager, the EU Commissioner responsible for competition, on Thursday in Brussels. Profitability The operating company is a joint project of KfW, Gasunie and RWE. Specifically, KfW is to grant the two companies a share of the dividends paid by the operator of the LNG terminal if the annual return on the...

German offshore wind industry sets an example

In June 2023, EMS Maritime Offshore GmbH (EMO) from Emden christened its latest ship, the WINDEA ONE, as the first parallel hybrid crew transfer vessel (CTV). In future, it will transport personnel and materials from Norden-Norddeich to the Borkum Riffgrund and Gode Wind wind farms (off Norderney). The offshore wind turbines will be operated by the Danish company Ørsted, which has chartered the ship from EMO on a long-term basis. International co-operation The ship was built by the Penguin Shipyard Group in Batam, Indonesia, under the name WindFlex-32 and is based on a design by the Australian engineering firm Incat-Crowther. It is already the fifth ship that the AG EMS Group, to which EMO also belongs, has commissioned...

EU: New undersea cable in the Black Sea to bypass Russia

The European Union is planning to lay a new 1,100-kilometre-long data cable in the Black Sea in order to bypass the existing terrestrial connection (fibre optic) to Georgia, which is considered "unsafe" and "unstable" because it runs through Russia. Such a connection was already being considered before Russia's invasion of Ukraine; following Georgia's membership application at the beginning of March 2022, its planning perspective has now been significantly advanced. The Financial Times refers to a previously unpublished strategy paper from the EU Commission. Data cable The cable through the Black Sea is to be laid in international waters and cost around 45 million euros....

Bremerhaven: Construction of converter platforms?

Offshore wind farms require the energy from the wind turbine generators (alternating current) to be transported via cables under the sea and then converted to direct current on land at the point of generation - as this is significantly less lossy over long distances. This conversion takes place in very voluminous converters that are anchored deep in the ground on high stilts near the wind farms, standing above the waves. These platforms, measuring an impressive 70 x 30 x 30 metres in length/width/height, are located around 20 metres above the surface of the water and reach up to 60 metres into the ground with their anchoring. Converters in Germany Currently...

SeeElefant - maritime plastic recycling made in Germany
