Fire defence on board: US Navy relies on robot technology

When a devastating fire broke out on the Bonhomme Richard at Naval Base San Diego in mid-July 2020, resulting in the total loss of the carrier ship, it would have been possible to intervene successfully with the automated systems available today. Could have! Of course, the Bonhomme Richard also suffered from hair-raising mistakes in the organisation of the firefighting, which turned this major fire into a catastrophe in the first place. However, the robot technology available today makes it possible to equip and train mobile and stable machines the size of dogs with sensors, effectors and artificial intelligence, which can move on board in decks and over obstacles and steps. Where are the "blue" scientists?

Scientists specialising in marine topics are in demand abroad. Here in Germany, however, they are fighting against disinterest and rejection. On the face of it, the 175th anniversary of German navies is primarily a matter for historians, as the aim is to draw the broad lines. However, such a rather narrow view has two major problems. Turkish Coast Guard divers investigated the underwater hull of a Liberian-flagged bulk carrier. Turkish authorities seized nearly 52 kilograms of cocaine wrapped in plastic and attached to the ship's anchor chain while the 176,000-tonne, 292-metre-long Berge Torre was anchored in the Bay of Iskenderun, near the Syrian border. A spokesman for the Turkish Interior Ministry said that the captain of the ship and some of its crew members were being questioned as part of the investigation, but it was unclear whether the crew was involved in the smuggling operation. However, he issued a clear warning that drug traffickers and couriers would not be tolerated.

The Inspector of the Navy, Vice Admiral Jan Christian Kaack, presented the annual report of the Naval Command at the Maritime Convention in Berlin on 21 November 2023. He explained: "The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, which has continued with unchanged intensity since February last year, clearly demonstrates not only the vulnerability of our globally networked world economy, but also continues to have an impact on the global flow of goods". Referring to the global security policy challenges, he explained: "With the 2023 plan, I have reaffirmed the path we have taken to consistently align the German Navy with the requirements of national and alliance defence. With our 'Naval Course...
