Steigende Umweltschutzauflagen könnten das Recycling von Schiffen auch in Deutschland wieder lukrativ machen. In Emden will die EWD von dieser Entwicklung profitieren. Yachten, U-Boote, Forschungsschiffe, Kreuzfahrtriesen: Deutsche Werften fertigen verschiedenste und anspruchsvollste Schiffe. Zudem wird hier umgebaut, repariert und gewartet. Es fehlen aber Betriebe, die alte Schiffe zerlegen. Aktuell sei Schiffsrecycling hierzulande weitgehend „inexistent“, erklärt Reinhard Lüken vom Verband für Schiffbau und Meerestechnik. In the annual report of the VSM (Verband für Schiffbau und Meerestechnik e. V. - German Shipbuilding and Ocean Industries Association), recruitment is a central concern.
