Ob in der Ukraine oder im Roten Meer: Drohnen stellen heute eine reale Bedrohung dar. Laserwaffensysteme könnten mittelfristig bei der Abwehr dieser autonomen Kleinstfluggeräte eine gewichtige Rolle spielen. Bei der Analyse des Kriegs in der Ukraine und zukünftiger Szenare stellt sich derzeit die Frage, wie eine effektive letale Abwehr von unbemannten Systemen und kleinen Zielen erfolgen kann. Offenbar werden zukünftig Lenkflugkörper aufgrund des hohen Preises nicht die erste Wahl sein, Drohnen abzuwehren, und die Trefferwahrscheinlichkeiten von Artilleriesystemen sind bei kleinen Zielen mit[ds_preview] unvorhersehbaren Richtungsänderungen naturgemäß begrenzt. Das Waffensystem Mako könnte eine kostengünstige und flexible Option darstellen, Kriegsschiffe und trägergestützte Flugzeuge mit Hyperschallwaffen auszustatten.     Im April stellte Lockheed Martin während der Fachmesse Sea-Air-Space der Navy League in Maryland die Hyperschallwaffe Mako vor. Die Rakete wird gemeinsam mit der Firma CoAspire entwickelt. Das Konzept wurde ursprünglich ab 2017 für das Beschaffungsprogramm Stand-in Attack Weapon (SiAW) der Air Force entworfen. Der entsprechende Vertrag ging letztlich zwar an Northrop Grumman, doch beschloss Lockheed Martin, die Entwicklung auf eigene Kosten fortzuführen in der Hoffnung, alternative Abnehmer zu finden.
