The "LI" of U 96 - now Friedrich Grade has disembarked after all!

The longest-lived member of the Naval Officers' Association, retired Captain Friedrich Grade (Crew 35), passed away on Friday, 13 October 2023 in Bornheim am Rhein, just north of Bonn, in the Beethoven retirement home at the age of 107. The cult film "Das Boot" made U 96 and its naval officer - or chief engineer, as it was known at the time - famous. Friedrich Grade was the last survivor of the submarine U 96, which sank 29 ships and damaged four on eleven voyages during the Second World War. As an LI, he took part in seven voyages up until 1941 and recorded his experiences in a secret...

German Marine Association calls for better protection of critical maritime infrastructure

At this year's meeting in Hamelin, the delegates of the 112th Congress of Representatives of the German Naval Association called on the Bundestag and the Federal Government to initiate a Maritime Security Act to clearly regulate responsibilities at sea. "Modern societies," said Heinz Maurus, President of the German Naval Association, "are dependent on critical infrastructure, including in the maritime environment. Among other things, it is used for energy supply, data traffic and maritime trade. Under water, it can only be monitored and protected with considerable effort. In view of the acts of sabotage that have already occurred, Nord Stream 2 and on a gas pipeline and a telecommunications cable between Estonia and Finland, as well as the generally conspicuous threats to critical infrastructure on...

Bremerhaven: T-AKR 112 "Cape Texas" is the old "Reichenfels"

Painted grey and for years part of the Ready Reserve Force (RRF) of the Maritime Administration (MARAD) of the US Department of Transportation, the "Cape Texas", or in military terms: T-AKR 112, appeared modest and inconspicuous. She had moored in Kaiserhafen III on the Weser, not far from the terminal of the US armed forces in the north of Bremerhaven, which is still well known from the Cold War era. Coming from Charleston (South Carolina), she had delivered a number of military vehicles to Europe, the final destination of which was not specified but should not be difficult to guess in the current situation. The classically cut, elegant and dignified appearance of the...

When the MUKdo becomes Kijima or Muck Island - the pitfalls of translation

On 27 September 2023, this portal reported on the handover of command of the Naval Support Command (MUKdo) in Wilhelmshaven on 29 September. This was based on a press release from the PIZ Marine dated 26 September 2023, from which dpa certainly also generated its short report dated 29 September 2023 (see below for both links). If you - like the marineforum editorial team - frequently deal with foreign information and sources, you tend to exercise caution when using translation programmes. Especially in the maritime field, things can go wrong! A few days ago, the "Aussiedlerbote" gave a striking example on its website: The message created from the dpa report for the German-Russian...
