The Russian state news agency Tass reported that warships from the Russian Pacific Fleet entered the Red Sea from Bab-el-Mandeb at the end of March. These are the missile cruiser "Varyag" (Hull No. 011, 186 metres, Slava class) and the destroyer "Marshal Shaposhnikov" (Hull No. 543, 163 metres, Udaloy class). The tasks assigned to both ships and the final destination of the formation were not mentioned in the report, nor was the reason for the deployment. Der Jahresbericht 2023 der Wehrbeauftragten benennt insbesondere im Personalbereich große Defizite. Beim Material hingegen setzt sich ein positiver Trend fort. Auch in ihrem 175-seitigen Jahresbericht 2023 zum Zustand der Bundeswehr zieht die Wehrbeauftragte des Deutschen Bundestages, Eva Högl, eine ernüchternde Bilanz: „Die Truppe altert und schrumpft immer weiter. Etliche Verbände haben große Personalvakanzen. Es mangelt an Material vom Großgerät bis hin zu Ersatzteilen. Durch die Abgabe an die Ukraine ist der Mangel noch größer geworden. The UK North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) has once again awarded exploration licences to companies in a new oil and gas licensing round after October 2023. The successful licence holders include the British offshore majors bp, the Norwegian group Equinor and TotalEnergies E&P UK. The exploration areas now awarded are located in the central and northern British North Sea and west of the Shetland Islands. This is also where the Victory gas field is located, for which Shell received the development and production licence from the NSTA at the beginning of the year.
