GNY: Kiel shipyard wants to build disposal platform for the Baltic Sea
The Kiel-based shipyard German Naval Yards, together with Rheinmetall Project Solutions GmbH (Düsseldorf) and another partner from the offshore sector, is bidding for the construction of a platform for the disposal of munitions from the Baltic Sea. The jointly developed platform could be deployed as a pilot plant in the Kolberger Heide munitions dumping area at the entrance to the Kiel Fjord before mid-2024 and dispose of conventional munitions such as torpedo heads, mines and artillery shells in an environmentally friendly manner. According to the latest estimates, 1.6 million tonnes of conventional and 220,000 tonnes of chemical warfare agents lie on the seabed off the German North Sea and Baltic coasts.
