Ghost nets off Rügen

Divers from the German nature conservation organisation "Gesellschaft zur Rettung der Delphine e. V." (GRD) say they have recovered several hundred kilograms of old fishing nets from the Baltic Sea in recent weeks. Crime scene: fairway buoy A fairway buoy sank years ago about eight kilometres off the coast of Rügen. As a result, more and more so-called ghost nets became entangled in it. The tangles of nets and ropes now weighed several tonnes and could be retrieved from a depth of around 30 metres using lifting bags. However, due to the cramped situation at the buoy and the increasingly rough weather, it was not possible to retrieve all the nets. The operation is to...

MeOHmare - MTU methanol engine for the shipping of the future

Joint project to develop the marine engine of the future by 2025 According to a press release, the companies Rolls-Royce (MTU Friedrichshafen) and Woodward L'Orange (Einspritzsysteme Großmotoren Stuttgart) and the research centre WTZ Roßlau (Dessau) have been working on the new joint project "MeOHmare" since the beginning of 2023, which is being funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) with eight million euros. The three companies are to develop a concept for a high-speed combustion engine for ships that can be operated with green methanol (e-methanol) in a CO2-neutral manner by the end of 2025. Fuel for future ship propulsion systems Green hydrogen is produced by electrolysis using renewable electricity. This hydrogen can be produced by synthesis and with the addition of...

EU: New package of measures to regulate "shadow fleet"

Denmark may inspect ships in the Baltic Sea to monitor sanctioned Russian oil exports. As part of the oil price cap for Russian crude oil introduced by the EU, the G7 states and Australia, the dominant Western insurers are not allowed to insure Russian oil cargoes priced above 60 dollars per barrel. Around 60 per cent of Russian oil is shipped by sea from Ust-Luga near the Estonian border and from Primorsk near St. Petersburg. Belte and Sund The route through the Baltic Sea also runs through Storebælt (Great...

Turkey: Cocaine found on bulk carrier

Turkish Coast Guard divers investigated the underwater hull of a Liberian-flagged bulk carrier. Turkish authorities seized nearly 52 kilograms of cocaine wrapped in plastic and attached to the ship's anchor chain while the 176,000-tonne, 292-metre-long Berge Torre was anchored in the Bay of Iskenderun, near the Syrian border. A spokesman for the Turkish Interior Ministry said that the captain of the ship and some of its crew members were being questioned as part of the investigation, but it was unclear whether the crew was involved in the smuggling operation. However, he issued a clear warning that drug traffickers and couriers would not be tolerated.
