Expensive LNG: Command back on two ferries

High LNG costs are forcing Norwegian Fjord Lines, based in Egersund, to convert two LNG-powered ferries to run on traditional marine gas oil (MGO). "The energy crisis caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine has led to exceptional volatility and significant price increases for LNG - and the price increases have been far higher than for traditional and less sustainable marine energy sources. ... This has led to a dramatic increase in energy costs for Fjord Line's two LNG-fuelled vessels, which is well above a financially sustainable level," the company explained. First LNG ferries Since last autumn...

U35 returns from EU deployment after 4 months

The submarine U35 is expected back at its home base in Eckernförde on Friday, 13 January 2023 at 10 a.m. The 30 men and one woman of the DELTA crew, led by frigate captain Nils Kirschall (44), spent almost four months in the Mediterranean. As part of the EU mission EUNAVFOR MED IRINI (European Union Naval Force Mediterranean IRINI), the submarine was involved in enforcing the United Nations arms embargo against Libya. A number of harbours in the Mediterranean were visited during this period. One of the highlights of the voyage was the visit of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on board the Eckernförde submarine in Valetta/Malta last October. Christmas...

Russian aircraft carrier: shipyard laytime and speculation

Shortly before Christmas, it happened after all: another fire broke out on the Russian aircraft carrier "Admiral Kuznetsov", which was undergoing repairs and modernisation in Murmansk, but this time it was brought under control quickly and without any significant personal injury. This sort of thing happens during shipyard layovers and it wouldn't really be worth reporting if Moscow didn't want to present proud flagships, newbuildings, launches and commissioning at home at a time of bad news from Ukraine (see reports on this elsewhere). After all, the somewhat hapless progress of work on the largest warship and only carrier of the Russian Federation, which has now been going on for five years, does not play into Moscow's hands...

Morocco reaches agreement with Spain on new corvette

For many years, the Royal Moroccan Navy has been pondering the question of adding new coast guard vessels to its fleet. The desired object would be an OPV 90 of the Avante1800 design from Navantia in Spain - somewhat smaller than the Avante2200 as recently delivered for Saudi Arabia (Al Jubail class), but also larger than the Avante1400 (OPV 80) as built a few years ago for Venezuela and others. The choice of Navantia also makes sense, as the shipyard is located just outside Morocco on the opposite coast of the Strait of Gibraltar. If only it weren't for the differences with Spain over the humanitarian...
