Die US-amerikanische und die japanische Marine wollten vergangene Woche gemeinsame Minenräumübungen durchführen, bis auf der JS „Ukushima“ (Sugashima-Klasse, MSC-686) am 10. November 2024 ein Feuer ausbrach. Das Schiff befand sich auf dem Weg zu der gemeinsamen Übung, wie ein Sprecher der japanischen Maritime Self-Defense Force am Dienstag mitteilte. Mit der Indienststellung des Typschiffs der Sachsen-Klasse erhielt die Marine vor 20 Jahren eine auf Luftverteidigung ausgelegte Fregatte. Ihre Fähigkeiten sind bis heute herausragend.
