Shipping history in the centre of Berlin

Until the Second World War, the Museum of Oceanography built up an important collection of maritime exhibits. But war damage and the subsequent confiscation destroyed Kaiser Wilhelm II's dream. Yes, there really was such a thing - a museum of oceanography in the centre of Berlin, founded by the shipping enthusiast Kaiser Wilhelm II and at the time a must-see for every patriotic German. Now part of the collection of the German Museum of Technology and also represented with individual exhibits in the Military History Training Centre (WGAZ) in Flensburg-Mürwik, it was world-class at the time. It was opened on 5 March 1906 in the rooms of the Chemical Institute in...

German Naval Yards: More than a shipyard!

The shock caused by the death of owner Iskandar Safa was huge. Questions and rumours arose. Time for clarifying words. People know us, the German Naval Yards. The traditional shipyard on the Kiel Fjord with the iconic gantry crane. And yet very few people know who and what is behind the company! After the sad news, misinformation made the rounds. People mistakenly thought we had already been "sold". German government formulates national port strategy

Seafarers' working conditions concern us all

At the beginning of February, an inspection by the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) discovered various shortcomings on a car carrier belonging to the Chinese shipping company Cosco. Among other things, the crew was paid far below the minimum standards set by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in the Maritime Labour Convention. Such abuses are not isolated cases. Time and again, seafarers report precarious working conditions that even violate human rights. However, these are not unique to merchant shipping. Such conditions are also known in manufacturing companies such as the textile or IT industry, or are condoned. This is because large companies deliberately have their goods produced in countries - mostly in the Global South - that...

IAMD ranges from ASMD to T/BMD

National and alliance defence is once again becoming the focus of attention at NATO. The ability to fend off approaching missiles in an international network is central to this. The Maritime Theater Missile Defence Forum (MTMD Forum) was founded in 1999 on the initiative of the Netherlands, the USA and Germany. In 2004, Australia, the UK, Canada, Italy and Spain joined the forum and confirmed their commitment through a joint Memorandum of Understanding. France and Norway joined in 2009 and 2015, followed by Denmark in 2016. The latest and twelfth member since 2020 is Belgium. They all operate units that are part of the...
